Contraindications

Review these conditions before proceeding and follow current orders, protocols, facility policy, and supervising-clinician direction.

  • Do not proceed when the patient cannot protect the airway, has severe uncontrolled bronchospasm, significant active hemoptysis, or unstable cardiopulmonary status unless a specialist-directed protocol explicitly addresses the risk.

Relative contraindications

Use individualized risk-benefit assessment, added precautions, or a modified approach as authorized for the patient and setting.

  • Recent thoracic, abdominal, neurologic, or ophthalmic surgery
  • Severe hypertension
  • Aneurysm risk
  • Pregnancy
  • Other conditions worsened by forceful coughing require individualized specialist assessment.
